ATROPHY, originally named Heresy, was formed in 1986 by Chris Lykins, James Gulotta, and Brian Zimmerman. In 1987, the band recorded their debut 6 track demo "Chemical Dependency". After the demos release ATROPHY would sign to RoadRunner Records, releasing two album: "Socialized Hate" (1988) and "Violent By Nature" (1990).

The "Chemical Dependency" demo is now for the first time officially re-issued on CD, including 4 bonus tracks recorded live in Toronto, Canada in 1989. Extensive liner notes by Chris Forbes from cult underground metal fanzine Metal Core.
